What is a reasonable accommodation?

At the Albert Lea Housing & Redevelopment Authority (HRA), we are dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations for all applicants and participants who have disabilities. It’s essentially a modification or adjustment to our standard rules, policies, practices, or services.

These changes are crucial for ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the same opportunities as others to enjoy our housing units, access our facilities, and participate in our activities and programs. This includes access to public and common-use spaces.

Our commitment is in line with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which outlaws discrimination against individuals with disabilities in any program that receives federal financial aid.

A reasonable accommodation might be necessary for someone with a disability to equally access our programs. This could involve changes or adjustments to our usual rules, policies, or services.

Reasonable accommodations are specifically designed to eliminate barriers related to disabilities in housing situations. You are eligible for a reasonable accommodation if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You have a mental or physical impairment that significantly restricts one or more major life activities.
  • You are perceived as having such an impairment.
  • You have a documented history of such an impairment.

This policy ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to housing by addressing and adapting to their unique needs.

You can request an accommodation verbally or in writing. While a formal request isn’t always necessary, we recommend using our Request for Reasonable Accommodation form for clarity. This form also includes authorization for us to obtain relevant information from a professional familiar with your situation.

Yes, but remember that your need for the accommodation must be verified as necessary.

No, just return the completed form to the HRA’s office at 800 S 4th Avenue, Albert Lea, MN 56007, by fax to (507) 373-0991 or by e-mail to alhra@albertleahra.com. We don’t require medical records; just verification from a professional who understands your disability.

Not always. We approve requests if they are made by or on behalf of a person with a disability, there’s a disability-related need, and the accommodation is reasonable without causing undue burden or fundamentally changing our operations

We aim to respond in writing within 14 business days after we receive verification from a knowledgeable professional.
