Board Spotlight

Linda Lares is one of our newer board members and has agreed to be our first Spotlight on the Board!  We appreciate our Board of Commissioners and want to share their stories with you!

What interested you about joining the board of the Albert Lea Housing and Redevelopment Authority?  Linda Lares began her term on our board in January of this year.  She said that initially she hadn't really thought about becoming a board member of the housing authority, but when Executive Director, Jeanne Leick contacted her and invited her to join the board, Linda said that it was really easy to say YES!   "It makes so much sense to collaborate with the Albert Lea HRA," commented Linda.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?  Linda feels that it is so important to lead by example.  It would be difficult to ask others to volunteer if she doesn't offer her own service as a volunteer.  Linda has learned so much through her volunteerism that she might not have otherwise had the opportunity to learn and finds that volunteering is so rewarding!

What is your current occupation?  Linda works for SEMCAC in Albert Lea as the Cultural Diversity Coordinator.  She has been with SEMCAC for 17 years and prior to that Linda worked for Freeborn County Community Action for 25 years.  SEMCAC offers direct service programs to those in need and her duties change from day to day.  No two days are alike in her world! She commented that her agency has been at its current location for a number of years, but is excited that SEMCAC will soon be moving to a brand-new downtown location at 204 Clark Street (across from Freeborn County DHS).  This new location will be more accessible to SEMCAC's clients.

If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose?  Picking just one mentor was too difficult for Linda and she said she was truly blessed to have had so many great mentors both personally and professionally in her life.

What's one thing - either industry-related or not - you learned in the last month?  This is interesting!!  Did you know that you have more than likely been putting your garbage bag in the garbage can wrong all these years?  Linda recently watched a video on the internet and found the correct way to install a garbage bag.  You can learn the correct method too!  Just Google - How to put a trash bag in a trash can

What's something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?  Not many people realize that Linda LOVES to jump rope!  Linda grew up with a Jump Rope in her hand!!  She went to Catholic School and jump roping was an important skill to learn during recess!!
