Established in 1965, the Albert Lea Housing and Redevelopment Authority (ALHRA) is a collaborative effort between the City of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This agency manages 176 Public Housing units, and 8 Rural Development Housing units, and administers 155 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV). A local agreement with the Freeborn County Government extends the reach of the HRA’s HCV program throughout the county.
The HRA actively engages in local partnerships to co-sponsor and promote initiatives like the Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) and the Minnesota Cities Participation Program (MCPP). These efforts are aimed at fostering affordable housing preservation and construction within the county.
The Board of Commissioners of the Albert Lea Housing and Redevelopment Authority (ALHRA) comprises seven dedicated members. These commissioners are appointed jointly by the Mayor and the City Council. One of the board members is also a tenant of Public Housing, providing valuable insights from the community’s perspective. Additionally, an ex-officio member, typically a local City Councilman, is appointed by the Mayor to serve on the Board.
